Spring Break:
Spring Break will be a short and sweet version of summer camp. Martial arts, games, movies and free time. What a great way to spend Spring Break!
Crafts:
This year at SMTKD summer camp, we are bringing back Martial Arts Crafts! That means making our own traditional weapons such as jos, escrima sticks and bo-staffs. We show the kids how to measure and cut the weapon of their choice to fit them personally. This is all done with hand tools – nothing electric, and of course closely supervised. Then we sand them, coat them with Linseed oil and finally buff them to a smooth finish. Campers learn about and experience the art of wood working, which teaches patience and the importance of foundation and planning. The kids also get to keep the weapons they make! Ok, sign me up!
SELF DEFENSE
At South Miami Martial Arts, we do not condone fighting, which we define as a physical contest to resolve a less-than-life-threatening conflict. We do, however, condone and encourage defending the life and physical safety of ourselves and others, even if that requires deadly force. The physical techniques we learn have less to do with self defense than the development of warrior spirit and the understanding of violent criminal behavior. Each week at camp, we dedicate at least one class to self-defense. Ok, sign me up!

TRADITIONAL MARTIAL ARTS
Each day at summer camp, we hold at least one formal, traditional martial arts class. This will include Taekwondo forms, light Taekwondo sparring (equipment provided for beginners), kicking and hand techniques and occasionally board breaking. We will also practice Aikido techniques including kata performed with the weapons the kids make during craft time. Activities are of course closely supervised and age/rank appropriate. All students of South Miami Martial Arts know that in any martial arts exercise, the priority is on the less experienced student receiving safe and productive training. Ok, sign me up!
EXERCISE
Every day at SMTKD summer camp, we exercise and stretch. Exercises will included the basics like push-ups, sit-ups, jumping jacks and running laps. Of course, we also have an endless list of martial arts oriented drills which provide a great workout. Before every class involving any physical activity, we stretch and warm up thoroughly. While we do of course encourage participation and improvement, no child is ever forced or coerced to do something they cannot or simply prefer not do. Our goal for summer camp is to pique the kids’ interest in martial arts. Experience has taught us that this is best accomplished with positive acknowledgement and reinforcement of genuine effort, regardless of the results of that effort. Ok, sign me up!
